Why won't my storage bed close?

Everything you need to know to bring your storage bed back to life

When a lift-up sofa bed does not work as it should, the problem is usually related to the gas springs or the weight of the mattress. Understanding how the opening and closing systems work is key to ensuring safety and durability in everyday use. In this article, we explain why this happens and what you can do to fix it safely with our gas springs.

The role of the gas spring in the lift-up canapé

A gas spring, also known as a gas piston, works by using compressed gas and nitrogen gas to generate force. This force depends directly on the internal pressure of the gas, which allows the system to generate a constant and controlled force.
The force of the gas spring and the thrust force must be adequate to avoid an opposing force that prevents the storage bed from closing.

The weight of the mattress and the right gas spring

The storage base is designed to work with a suitable gas spring. If you replace the mattress with a heavier or lighter one, the gas varies and the system stops working properly.

  • In heavy mattresses, the gas springs may not lift the assembly.
  • In light mattresses, the gas damper or gas spring may prevent complete closure

This applies to both folding beds and other gas systems for divan beds and gas dampers for furniture.

Objects blocking gas struts absorbers

Clothes, shoes, or even a box of toys can block gas shock absorbers or gas dampers, affecting the hydraulic system and hydraulic pistons. This type of failure is very common in everyday life.

Service life of gas springs

Gas springs have an approximate service life of 5 to 10 years. Over time, they can lose pressure due to wear, moisture, or improper use. That is why it is important to select the right spring for the application.

Our products are made of steel and stainless steel, which guarantees resistance in both domestic furniture and industrial machinery, industrial machines, and industrial applications.

Uses beyond lift-up beds

Gas springs are not only used in lift-up beds. Gas springs also work well in the following applications, which you can read more about in our article Gas Spring Applications.

  • Door lifts
  • Garage doors
  • Refrigerated display cases
  • Pneumatic lifts
